I Can See My House from Here ... And It's Underwater!

http://www.thedailygreen.com/print-this/environmental-news/latest/google-earth-global-warming-47052002" \l " 5.20.2008 8:46 AM I Can See My House from Here ... And It's Underwater! Google Earth Adds a Global Warming Layer Google Earth has teamed up with the U.K. government to produce a new layer that shows vividly how the Earth will change this century due to global warming.

Over the course of the century, you can watch the earth heat up in an animation that ultimately leaves the Arctic nearly 20 degrees (C) warmer than in 1999. Most areas across the United States appear somewhere between 4 and 10 degrees warmer.

Specific predicted impacts are shown, such as extreme summer heat waves and choking air pollution in Northeastern cities, decreasing water supply in California and increasing wildfire risk across the West.

These projections represent a middle-path scenario. They assume that something is done to curtail emissions of greenhouse gases, but not as much as the scientific community and United Nations has said is necessary.

“Climate change is redrawing the maps of the world. Its impacts will be felt everywhere, as sea levels rise, crops fail, extreme weather increases and more areas are at risk of drought and flooding," said U.K. Environment Secretary Hilary Benn. "This project shows people the reality of climate change using only moderate estimates both the change of the average temperature where they live, and the impacts it will have on people’s lives all over the world including here in Britain. Only by enabling people to understand what climate change means for them and for the world can we mobilize the action we need to avoid the worst effects of a changing climate."

Another new layer shows how Antarctica has changed in the last 50 years, as several ice shelves have been lost, but there has been thickening across the interior. Recent research suggests Antarctica is being shielded from warming by the deterioration of the ozone layer, which has effectively counteracted the greenhouse effect.

Add the Climate Change in Our World layer to Google Earth and start exploring the world our children will experience. Find this article at: http://www.thedailygreen.com/environmental-news/latest/google-earth-global-warming-47052002

One School, One Tree, One Gift to Nature

The Green Wave

One School, One Tree, One Gift to Nature

What?

* The Green Wave is a multi-year tree-planting campaign for children and youth around the world leading up to 2010 - the International Year of Biodiversity.

* In participating schools, students will plant one tree on or around 22 May - the International Day for Biological Diversity (IBD).

* Students will count down to 10am local time, when they will water their tree, thereby creating a global "green wave".

* Students will upload photos and text summaries to an interactive map on The Green Wave website to share their tree-planting story with others. This map will go live at 20:10 local time, thereby creating a second "green wave".

Who?

* Students and teachers in all countries will plant a tree.

* The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the rest of the world will support and observe the action.

Where?

* The Green Wave will happen in schools all around the world.

* The main activities for The Green Wave will be on IBD (Thursday 22 May 2008).

Why?

* The Green Wave enables children and youth to make a difference - one school, one tree, one step at a time.

* It brings together children and youth from around the world to raise awareness about biodiversity, and the need to reduce its loss.

* The Green Wave encourages youth engagement in the global biodiversity agenda by promoting local action and working with local and international partners.

* The Green Wave will contribute to the Plant for the Planet Billion Tree Campaign.

How?

* Spread the word about The Green Wave among students, teachers, schools, NGOs working on curriculum and educational projects, tree nurseries, media, Ministries of Education and other partners.

* Post a link with the attached picture files on your website.

CBD Launches new tree-planting initiative for students

Subject: CBD Launches new tree-planting initiative for students

      Dear Sir/Madame,

I would like to bring to your attention an exciting global tree-planting initiative called "The Green Wave" that targets children and youth. It is an initiative of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

This email provides an overview of The Green Wave, and requests your assistance in spreading the news and in encouraging the participation of many schools.

Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Christine Gibb, and I am the focal point for children and youth at the CBD Secretariat. I am also contact person for The Green Wave.

      1. Background on The Green Wave The Green Wave is a multi-year tree planting initiative that enables children and youth to make a difference - one school, one tree, one step at a time. It brings together students and teachers from around the world to raise awareness about biodiversity, and the need to reduce its loss. The campaign will contribute to the Billion Tree Campaign.

In participating schools, students plant a locally important tree species in or near their schoolyard. On 22 May, the International Day of Biological Diversity (IBD), students around the world will count down to 10:00 local time, when they will water their tree in their respective schoolyards, thereby creating a figurative “green wave” starting in the far east and traveling west around the world. Throughout the day, students will upload photos and text summaries to http://greenwave.cbd.int to share their tree-planting story with other children and youth from around the world. An interactive map depicting all the Green Wave trees will go live at 20:10 local time, thereby creating a second “green wave”.

      2. Requesting your help The CBD wants to get The Green Wave message out to as many schools as possible, and would be most grateful for your help. I will send you our electronic advertisement with the "who, what, where, when, why and how" details of the initiative. Will you please assist with the following:

      • distributing this communication to all your contacts and to schools? Or, enabling the greenwave@cbd.int account to send the communication out on your listserv?
      • encouraging the participation of schools in The Green Wave?

Thank you very much in advance for your support.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions. I look forward to corresponding with you and supporting the Green Wave schools in your countries.

      Best regards, Christine
