SEVEN REASONS FOR A NEW NATURE MOVEMENT : Field Notes from the Future

SEVEN REASONS FOR A NEW NATURE MOVEMENT : Field Notes from the Future: "By Richard Louv on June 20th, 2011 SEVEN REASONS FOR A NEW NATURE MOVEMENT Martin Luther King Jr. taught us, by word and example, that any movement — any culture —will fail if it cannot paint a picture of a world that people will want to go to. As others have said, his speech was not called “I Have a Nightmare.”"

Whitehorse school in Rivers to Ocean Week video

The shadow puppet show in this video—Thank You for the River--was filmed at Hidden Valley in early June. It was presented as part of a celebration of Rivers to Oceans Week, and the signing of a cooperation agreement between Environment Yukon and the Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF).

Kudos to teacher Roma Dobrowolksy, her students, and Marten Berkman for the video montage.

some highlights from NAAEE newsletter

The Fish Game by The Cloud Institute for Sustainability

This online game is designed to teach sustainability by demonstrating the problems overfishing can cause. Players fish for 10 days, earning money for each fish, along with other people doing the same. They learn the rate that the lake restocks the fish population over the 10-day period and how to balance that with their own needs as well as having to consider what impact others are having on the fish population.

Riparia’s River

By Michael J. Caduto. (Tilbury House Publishers, Gardiner, Maine)

A mysterious naturalist named Riparia helps the children understand how pollution is affecting the nature of the river. Friends and neighbors help restore clean water to the river they love. Filled with information and action, Riparia’s River features lush, realistic illustrations that illuminate the children’s passion for their river.

All that carbon in the atmosphere is doing more than changing the climate. It's also changing the basic chemistry of the global ocean, to scientists' surprise. Alanna will inspire with stories of how she travelled the globe to meet the scientists who are figuring it out and how she put the pieces of this scientific puzzle together. She will leave you with hope and a sense of how people around the world can work together to bring us back from the brink.

Early Childhood Environmental Education Programs

Early Childhood Environmental Education Programs: Guidelines for Excellence is the newest addition to the continuing series published by NAAEE as part of the National Project for Excellence in Environmental Education. Hundreds of individuals and organizations representing all aspects of early childhood education and environmental education reviewed working outlines and drafts. Reviewers include classroom teachers, daycare and early childhood education center staff members, administrators, environmental scientists, curriculum developers, and natural resource agency and education department staff members.

Early Childhood Environmental Education Programs: Guidelines for Excellence contains a set of recommendations for developing and administering high-quality environmental education programs for young children from birth to age eight, with a focus on ages three to six. These guidelines provide a tool that can be used to ensure a firm foundation for new programs or to trigger improvements in existing ones. The overall goal of these guidelines is to chart an appropriate and positive process whereby educators can start young children on their journey toward becoming environmentally responsive youth and adults.

Green Teacher webinars: what topics would be most useful?

Green Teacher magazine is excited to announce that we will be hosting up to 30 one hour, free webinars, from February through November. The webinars will take place on weekday evenings, starting at 7:30pm EST.  Each will address a particular environmental education topic and feature one or more guest presenters. Two-thirds of the webinars will be aimed at formal classroom teachers.  The remaining third will focus on learning strategies that are more useful for non-formal youth educators.

To ensure that the webinar topics meet the greatest needs of environmental educators, we are have created a short survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/76KDMXX.    Help us decide whether we should have a webinar on teaching young children about energy conservation, or one on leading youth groups on outdoor hikes – or both, or something entirely different!

The survey lists at least 20 themes, and asks you to pick those of greatest interest, as well as to indicate what age group you most work most often.  It also allows you to suggest more specific topics, and to recommend one or more presenters that could address a topic well.   And if you wish, you can also sign up to receive seasonal updates of the webinars we will be offering throughout 2011.

The survey will be available until February 9th and takes but five minutes to complete.  All responses will be kept confidential.

I will be the host for the webinars, and am excited by the potential of the webinars to provide innovative ideas and learning strategies serve large numbers of youth educators.

I thank you in advance to any input you can provide.

Sincerely yours,

Tim Grant
