Dear Sir/Madame,
I would like to bring to your attention an exciting global tree-planting initiative called "The Green Wave" that targets children and youth. It is an initiative of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
This email provides an overview of The Green Wave, and requests your assistance in spreading the news and in encouraging the participation of many schools.
Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Christine Gibb, and I am the focal point for children and youth at the CBD Secretariat. I am also contact person for The Green Wave.
1. Background on The Green Wave The Green Wave is a multi-year tree planting initiative that enables children and youth to make a difference - one school, one tree, one step at a time. It brings together students and teachers from around the world to raise awareness about biodiversity, and the need to reduce its loss. The campaign will contribute to the Billion Tree Campaign.
In participating schools, students plant a locally important tree species in or near their schoolyard. On 22 May, the International Day of Biological Diversity (IBD), students around the world will count down to 10:00 local time, when they will water their tree in their respective schoolyards, thereby creating a figurative “green wave” starting in the far east and traveling west around the world. Throughout the day, students will upload photos and text summaries to http://greenwave.cbd.int to share their tree-planting story with other children and youth from around the world. An interactive map depicting all the Green Wave trees will go live at 20:10 local time, thereby creating a second “green wave”.
2. Requesting your help The CBD wants to get The Green Wave message out to as many schools as possible, and would be most grateful for your help. I will send you our electronic advertisement with the "who, what, where, when, why and how" details of the initiative. Will you please assist with the following:
Thank you very much in advance for your support.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions. I look forward to corresponding with you and supporting the Green Wave schools in your countries.
Best regards, Christine
