One School, One Tree, One Gift to Nature

What?

The Green Wave is a multi-year tree-planting campaign for children and youth around the world leading up to 2010 - the International Year of Biodiversity.

In participating schools, students will plant one tree on or around 22 May - the International Day for Biological Diversity (IBD).

Students will count down to 10am local time, when they will water their tree, thereby creating a global "green wave".

Students will upload photos and text summaries to an interactive map on The Green Wave website to share their tree-planting story with others. This map will go live at 20:10 local time, thereby creating a second "green wave".

Who?

Students and teachers in all countries will plant a tree.

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the rest of the world will support and observe the action.

Where?

The Green Wave will happen in schools all around the world.

When?

The Green Wave website is live. Start planning your school's special events now!

The main activities for The Green Wave will be on IBD (Thursday 22 May 2008).

Why?

The Green Wave enables children and youth to make a difference - one school, one tree, one step at a time.

It brings together children and youth from around the world to raise awareness about biodiversity, and the need to reduce its loss.

The Green Wave encourages youth engagement in the global biodiversity agenda by promoting local action and working with local and international partners.

The Green Wave will contribute to the Plant for the Planet Billion Tree Campaign.

How?

Spread the word about The Green Wave among students, teachers, schools, NGOs working on curriculum and educational projects, tree nurseries, media, Ministries of Education and other partners.
