FW: bringing the gulf spill to your home

Subject: [conservation-psychology] bringing the gulf spill to your home

One of the problems with catastrophes of huge proportions (and very
large
numbers in general) is that the human mind has a very hard time
assigning
emotional meaning to them. Calibration is a way to address this problem.

This little website does a terrific job at calibrating & bringing the
spill
home with quite simple means.

EECOM News ISSUE 3 2010
In the Message from the Co-chairs, Catherine Dumouchel explores diversity, noting that just as biological diversity is defined at different levels, the diversity amongst the environmental education community is reflected in its individual and organizational members, as well as in the education contexts in which it operates and the benefits it strives to achieve for environmental learners.

MEET DAVID, EECOM Co-Chair, who has been, and is, many things to many people; biologist, associate professor, science and environmental educator, researcher, educational consultant, leader and visionary, publisher/editor, author, and a firm believer in walking the talk…

EECOM recognizes contributions of outstanding individuals and organizations engaged in environmental learning across
Canada with the 2009 Canadian Awards of Excellence in Environmental Education Awards.

Children are uniquely vulnerable to toxins and hazards in their environments. Our schools, their condition, and the products and practices used in them, can influence children's health, well being and educational outcomes. CANADA to celebrate and encourage healthy environments in and around classrooms and school buildings.

Belugas, Humpback Whales and Biodiversity:

An Amazing Sailing Voyage of

Learning Along the St. Lawrence River

Sail. Learn. Discover.

Where: Tadoussac, Quebec
When: Sunday, August 8 to Sunday, August 15, 2010
Cost: $1,500
Languages: English and French

Spend eight days with some of the largest mammals on earth, and the scientists who know them well. Get up close to one of Canada's most fascinating marine ecosystems.

Dr. Yves Jean is the host of
the 2010 Summer Institute

Agenda

See the 2010 Summer Institute agenda. Elements described in this agenda are subject to shifts for smooth sailing as we work out details. Stay tuned for updates.

Sign up for more information.

Attention Educators
Educators are invited to set sail with the CWF Learning Institute on the St. Lawrence River from August 8 to15, 2010. This unique professional development opportunity features guided explorations of the Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park, where salt water mixes with fresh, and humpbacks swim with fin whales.

CWFLI’s 2010 Summer Institute combines science with new technologies and sailing to encourage explorations of the biodiversity of this unique ecosystem. It is here that a number of whale species congregate to feed and raise their young including the largest animal on earth, the majestic blue whale.

Discover how research has helped to create regulations that enable us to co-exist in this very fragile habitat. This event is hosted by Dr. Yves Jean, a Founding Fellow of the CWF Learning Institute and Director of the Science and Technology department for the
University of Quebec in Montreal (TELUQ). Qualified educators may also enroll in this Summer Institute to earn a university credit.
