Model Arctic Council October 27-30, 2010, Northern Youth Council discussing pressing issues across the Arctic: "Model Arctic Council October 27-30, 2010 Westmark Hotel 201 Wood Street Whitehorse, Yukon The United Nations Association in Canada is excited to announce its inaugural Model Arctic Council, to be held in Whitehorse, Yukon, October 27-30, 2010. High school youth, from across the northernmost reaches of Canada, and delegations from other arctic countries, will gather to deliberate on the most pressing issues confronting the arctic. The Model Arctic Council (MAC) is a simulation of the Arctic Council that allows students to take on the roles of the various parties comprising the Arctic Council and explore topics of vital importance to the arctic from the point of view of the country or organization they represent. This is the first time ever a simulation of the Arctic Council has been done in Canada and we know that for many this will be a first such opportunity to work with peers from within your special region. Registration is now open, and we welcome expressions of interest from students and teachers. En cette année internationale de la biodiversité, venez réfléchir au rapport que l'être humain entretient avec la nature ainsi qu'au rôle que peut jouer l'éducation pour la sauvegarde de la biodiversité. Le colloque abordera notamment les quatre questions suivantes :

-          Quel est l'état de nos connaissances en matière de biodiversité?

-          Qu'en est-il de notre rapport avec la nature?

-          En quoi la rupture des liens avec la nature nous affecte-t-elle?

-          Comment pouvons-nous favoriser les liens entre jeunes et nature?

Entre autres, au programme :

-          Un choix parmi 7 tables rondes et 20 ateliers pédagogiques.

-          La divulgation des résultats d'un sondage réalisé auprès de 1 200 jeunes sur leurs attitudes à l'égard de la nature et des activités de plein-air.

-          La conférence « Perdus sans la nature : Pourquoi les jeunes ne jouent plus dehors et comment y remédier? »  de François Cardinal, éditorialiste au journal la Presse.

-          La conférence « Prendre un rendez-vous avec la nature! » de Rachel Léger, directrice du Biodôme de Montréal.

-          Une cinquantaine de kiosques d'organisations préoccupées des liens entre les jeunes et la nature.

FW: Invitation: Education for Sustainability | International Greening Education Event 2010 | Karlsruhe - Germany

A three-day International Event on Greening Education will be held from 27th to 29th of October 2010 in the "green" city of Karlsruhe, Germany. This event will take academia, education and environmental policy makers, senior members of academic institutions, representatives of government and non-governmental organisations and international development agencies, teachers and school administrators, sustainable development and environmental management professionals and other stakeholders through the need for greening education and then discuss effective initiatives that can be taken to translate “education for sustainability” in to actions.

 

Further to the knowledge sharing on greening education including topics such as ecologizing curriculum (incorporating sustainability), greening of courses and creating low carbon education institutions; the upcoming event also provides an excellent networking opportunity with academia, sustainable development practitioners and other stakeholders in Europe and beyond. An excursion (optional) on Saturday the 30th of October, 2010 is planned which will also provide an additional and informal networking opportunity.

Description:

    The non-profit organization Environmental Protection in the Caribbean (
EPIC) is seeking an environmental education intern for the period January 15-March 1, 2011. The internship takes place on the island of St. Maarten in the Netherlands Antilles. The intern would work within the Love the Lagoon Project, which aims to protect the environment of the Simpson Bay Lagoon, one of the largest lagoons in the West Indies. This position is supervised by the Love the Lagoon Project Manager. The primary focus of the internship is providing interactive presentations and field trips to primary and secondary school students about the importance of wetlands. Limited administrative work will be needed. Applicants should have experience as an educator and be familiar with tropical wetland ecosystems and conservation. Housing is provided along with $50/week stipend and reimbursement for work travel on-island. Travel to and from the island is the responsibility of the applicant. Applicants may apply by sending a CV and contact information for two references to ncollier@epicislands.org .
