The Healthy by Nature Forum is coming to Vancouver, BC on September 20-23, 2011.

This interdisciplinary conference* will explore the physical and mental health and well-being benefits of spending time in nature. Participants will consider how we can move from intuition and scientific evidence to collaborative action and communities that are Healthy by Nature.

The Fish Game by The Cloud Institute for Sustainability

This online game is designed to teach sustainability by demonstrating the problems overfishing can cause. Players fish for 10 days, earning money for each fish, along with other people doing the same. They learn the rate that the lake restocks the fish population over the 10-day period and how to balance that with their own needs as well as having to consider what impact others are having on the fish population.

In this update, we would like to bring your attention to a few upcoming opportunities across the country that relate to the Canadian child and nature movement.

As part of our Natural Leaders Alliance, BC Youth are invited to apply for the Get Outside BC Youth project that we're collaborating on with CPAWS-BC, BC Parks, Mountain Equipment Co-op and Parks Canada! Applications are due May 31st, so please spread the word to any interested youth you know! The first part of the project is a free, 3-day outdoor youth leadership summit! In April, the Active Healthy Kids Canada 2011 Report Card was released, and for the first time, presented an indicator for Nature and Outdoor Time. The Alliance, along with Kid Active and Carp Ridge Learning Centre collaborated with the Research Team to develop the indicator. The Environmental Education Association of the Yukon (EEAY) is a registered Yukon non-profit group comprised of Yukoners interested in environmental education. We meet on a regular basis to share information about environmental education in the the territory.

Currently, we have representation from numerous groups involved with environmental education in the Yukon including private citizens, elementary, secondary & post-secondary teachers and local/regional environmental organizations.

EEAY was formed in the early 1990's as a registered Yukon society, open to all.

Our mandate: "To promote environmental education in the Yukon and foster communication between individuals and groups with and interest in environmental education".

Our vision: "We imagine a world where all learners have adequate opportunity to discover the natural world and gain an understanding of the ecosystems that support all life, and are encouraged to live responsibly on this planet."

Main activities include regular public "sharing meetings" which include a feature presentation and roundtable updates from all attendees.

An electronic version of the Organization Assessment Tool (OAT) is now available online. The OAT is available in Word and Adobe files. You may use the Word file to adapt the OAT to the specific self-assessment needs of your organization. Also provided are two Excel spreadsheets to facilitate the recording and tallying of self-assessment responses.

To get you started EETAP has provided a brief PowerPoint presentation that introduces the OAT. The presentation answers questions such as:

· What is organization assessment?
· What is the OAT?
· Who can use the OAT?
· How can the OAT help individuals and organizations?

EETAP has a small supply of paper copies of the OAT remaining. If you prefer paper copies for you or your team please complete the online order form. Early Childhood Environmental Education Programs

Early Childhood Environmental Education Programs: Guidelines for Excellence is the newest addition to the continuing series published by NAAEE as part of the National Project for Excellence in Environmental Education. Hundreds of individuals and organizations representing all aspects of early childhood education and environmental education reviewed working outlines and drafts. Reviewers include classroom teachers, daycare and early childhood education center staff members, administrators, environmental scientists, curriculum developers, and natural resource agency and education department staff members.

Early Childhood Environmental Education Programs: Guidelines for Excellence contains a set of recommendations for developing and administering high-quality environmental education programs for young children from birth to age eight, with a focus on ages three to six. These guidelines provide a tool that can be used to ensure a firm foundation for new programs or to trigger improvements in existing ones. 10. The Use of a Piece of Land- This role-playing activity engages students in land use planning, helping to reinforce the positive and negative aspects of land use laws and local zoning ordinances. Using photographs or color slides and a legal description (deed) of a choice piece of relatively undeveloped real estate in their area, students work in groups to select a proposed use for the parcel, research pertinent ordinances or planning reports, and develop a case as to why the land should be put to that use. Each group presents their case for structured discussion by all class members. Example photos and some suggestions for proposed uses are included. Green Teacher webinars: what topics would be most useful?

Green Teacher magazine is excited to announce that we will be hosting up to 30 one hour, free webinars, from February through November. The webinars will take place on weekday evenings, starting at 7:30pm EST. Each will address a particular environmental education topic and feature one or more guest presenters. Two-thirds of the webinars will be aimed at formal classroom teachers. The remaining third will focus on learning strategies that are more useful for non-formal youth educators.

To ensure that the webinar topics meet the greatest needs of environmental educators, we are have created a short survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/76KDMXX. Help us decide whether we should have a webinar on teaching young children about energy conservation, or one on leading youth groups on outdoor hikes – or both, or something entirely different!

The survey lists at least 20 themes, and asks you to pick those of greatest interest, as well as to indicate what age group you most work most often. It also allows you to suggest more specific topics, and to recommend one or more presenters that could address a topic well. And if you wish, you can also sign up to receive seasonal updates of the webinars we will be offering throughout 2011.

The survey will be available until February 9^th and takes but five minutes to complete. All responses will be kept confidential.

I will be the host for the webinars, and am excited by the potential of the webinars to provide innovative ideas and learning strategies serve large numbers of youth educators.

Antarctic Opportunity for University Students

Students on Ice Antarctic University Expedition 2011

A few spaces are still available on the Students on Ice Antarctic

University Expedition in February 2011. This unique educational

experience is open to international undergraduate and graduate-level

University students and offers the opportunity to enroll in one of

several accredited field courses from Canadian and Scottish

Universities. The students will be mentored by a team of 25 scientists,

historians, artists, explorers, educators, and polar experts. Students

will participate in both cross-disciplinary activities and in-depth

studies in their selected field course, and will develop the knowledge,

skills, perspectives and practices that will help them to pursue their

future careers.

The expedition will serve as a powerful and unique international

platform to inspire, educate, create change, and raise awareness around

the world about polar science and research, the impacts of climate

change and other issues facing Antarctica.

The Antarctic University Expedition involves traveling to southern

Argentina to board the ice-strengthened vessel for the trip south to the

Antarctic Peninsula. The vessel will serve as floating home and

classroom. Expedition participants will conduct at-sea wildlife surveys

during transit, explore Antarctic coastal waters from small boats and

participate in shore-based activities (e.g. visits to wildlife colonies,

research stations and historical sites).

Participation in the expedition is open to University students with an

interest in experiencing the unique Antarctic environment and requires

payment of a substantial expedition fee plus travel costs.

The newly created Youth Take Charge Program plays a major part in the modernization of Canadian Heritage's youth programming by providing $12.3 million over three years to youth-led projects promoting youth attachment to Canada. Through partnerships with youth-serving organizations, the Program will support projects that exemplify an ability to strengthen youth attachment to Canada in the following thematic areas:

1) History and heritage

2) Civic engagement and youth service

3) Arts and culture

4) Economic activities

Through the Youth Take Charge Program, the Government of Canada will enable young Canadians to become involved in a range of activities designed to strengthen their knowledge of and attachment to Canada. The non-profit organization Environmental Protection in the Caribbean (EPIC) is seeking an environmental education intern for the period January 15-March 1, 2011. The internship takes place on the island of St. Maarten in the Netherlands Antilles. The intern would work within the Love the Lagoon Project, which aims to protect the environment of the Simpson Bay Lagoon, one of the largest lagoons in the West Indies. This position is supervised by the Love the Lagoon Project Manager. The primary focus of the internship is providing interactive presentations and field trips to primary and secondary school students about the importance of wetlands. Limited administrative work will be needed. Applicants should have experience as an educator and be familiar with tropical wetland ecosystems and conservation. Housing is provided along with $50/week stipend and reimbursement for work travel on-island. Travel to and from the island is the responsibility of the applicant. Abstract: The global future lies before us as a highly uncertain and contested landscape with numerous perils along the way. This study explores possible pathways to sustainability by considering in quantitative detail four contrasting scenarios for the twenty-first century. The analysis reveals vividly the risks of conventional development approaches and the real danger of socio-ecological descent. Nonetheless, the paper underscores that a Great Transition scenario—turning toward a civilization of enhanced human well-being and environmental resilience—remains an option, and identifies a suite of strategic and value changes for getting there. A fundamental shift in the development paradigm is found to be an urgent necessity for assuring a sustainable future and, as well, a hopeful opportunity for creating a world of enriched lives, human amity, and a healthy ecosphere.

National Environmental Education Act for Canada???

Dear colleague,

In May, during EECOM's AGM at the 2010 conference in Vancouver, EECOM members in attendance voted unanimously in favour of the following motion, that: "EECOM in collaboration with its affiliated organizations in each province and territory, organize a campaign to investigate a National Environmental Act via a private members bill or other appropriate mechanism."

We are writing now to ask if your association would be supportive of, and interested in collaborating with EECOM and with other provincial/territorial associations such as yours, in this important national project -- that of advocating for a National (and non-partisan) Environmental Education Act to be approved by Canada’s parliament.

Why is this important? Canada is one of the few western countries without such a national act. Educators in other countries know that a national act obligates their federal government to provide important supports for environmental education. In the US for example, their National Environmental Education Act ensures that the government supports and disseminates EE research, operates a competitive grants program, ensures government agencies at all levels coordinate efforts in promoting EE, and publicizes innovative enviro-education practices.

What it would take to make this happen here in Canada? This is what we'd like to talk to you about! The first steps would likely involve finding supportive individual Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Bloc, Liberals, NDP (and Conservatives?) willing to co-sponsor such a bill. A bill would then have to be drafted for comments from the environmental learning community and be vetted amongst all political parties. For reference, we will provide everyone with copies of the 10 page 1990 US act.

Above all, what will be needed to be successful in this outreach effort is an out-pouring of emails, letters and phone calls by educators in every corner of English and French Canada, both to their own Members of Parliament, but also to the Prime Minister. This is why we are turning to you and your organization, and asking if you would support EECOM and others with this initiative.

We recognize that your next board meeting may be as much as one or two months’ away. If you can let us know when your board might next have the opportunity to discuss this matter this would be much appreciated. We thank you in advance for your earliest consideration of this matter, and look forward to hearing from you soon. We plan to kick off our networking efforts in earnest sometime this fall.

RCEN 2010 Conference “Conserving Biodiversity Pays: the Values of Ecosystem Services”

Deadline July 4th

The Canadian Environmental Network (RCEN) is calling for nominations and applications for participation of youth panellists in its aforementioned conference to be held from September 17-19, 2010, in Montreal. We are looking for youth panelists for the following panels:

o Perspectives on Biodiversity - The Values of Ecosystem Services
Short presentations on the different values of ecosystem services by groups identified by the Convention on Biological Diversity and other perspectives.

o Visions of the Saint Lawrence in 2021
A look at the ecosystem services provided by the Saint Lawrence River, threats to its biodiversity and possible solutions that will protect it for the next 10 years.

o Panel on the Boreal Forest, the Oil Sands and Biodiversity*

* Please note that for this call, we are specifically looking for an Aboriginal youth, male or female.

The registration fee, meal costs and half of travelling expenses (e.g. 50% of bus, train or airplane ticket costs) for the conference will be covered for the youth panellists. However, panellists will be responsible for arranging and paying for their accommodation and other applicable fees (including 50% of their travel expenses).

In order to participate as a youth panellist, you must meet the selection criteria and expectations below:

Selection Criteria: Successful applicants

· Are between 15 and 30;

· Have extensive knowledge of the panel’s theme;

· Are confident speaking and delivering a formal presentation in front of a large group;

· Have experience with research and community work at the local, national and international level is an asset.

Expectations of the youth panellists:

· Participate in a teleconference both before and after the event;

· Adequately prepare your presentation and send it to Marie-Pierre Daigle (marie-pierre@cen-rce.org) at least two weeks prior to the conference;

· Undertake additional independent research on the theme in order to better answer specific questions related to the topic discussed;

· Contribute actively to the panel; and

· Partake actively in the entire conference.

If you are interested, please submit your application in a cover letter format by providing the required personal information and answering the following questions:

§ Your name, age, and region of residence.

§ Indicate your language proficiency in English and French.

§ Do you work or volunteer for an environmental organization?

§ Which panel are you interested in?

§ Why are you interested in participating as a panellist?

§ Describe your specific qualifications related to the panel’s topic for which you are applying Please indicate any research, work, and/or volunteer experience that you may have in that field.

§ How do you plan to pay for your travel and other costs incurred by this trip?

Your nomination must be e-mailed to Marie-Pierre Daigle, Youth Caucus Intern, at marie-pierre@cen-rce.org before Sunday, July 4, 2010 at midnight, Pacific time.

Educators are invited to set sail with the CWF Learning Institute on the St. Lawrence River from August 8 to15, 2010. This unique professional development opportunity features guided explorations of the Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park, where salt water mixes with fresh, and humpbacks swim with fin whales.

CWFLI’s 2010 Summer Institute combines science with new technologies and sailing to encourage explorations of the biodiversity of this unique ecosystem. It is here that a number of whale species congregate to feed and raise their young including the largest animal on earth, the majestic blue whale.

Discover how research has helped to create regulations that enable us to co-exist in this very fragile habitat. This event is hosted by Dr. Yves Jean, a Founding Fellow of the CWF Learning Institute and Director of the Science and Technology department for the University of Quebec in Montreal (TELUQ). Qualified educators may also enroll in this Summer Institute to earn a university credit.

The winning project will receive a wind energy generator kit for their school and will have their project displayed over our international forum.

Launched on Earth Day, April 22, the contest is open to all young Canadians aged 19 or younger. Youth are invited to "get to know" local plants and animals and then submit works of art, writing, or photography to the contest for a chance to win wild prizes including a week-long stay at Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, hosted by Parks Canada. Other prizes include gifts from Scholastic, Panasonic, and Opus Framing and Art Supplies, cash prizes, and the opportunity to have your work published in the 2011 Get to Know Contest Calendar. The Contest closes May 28. Teachers may use the contest as a school project to help their students learn about biodiversity. While pollinators may come in small sizes, they play a large and often undervalued role in the production of the food we eat, the health of flowering plants, and the future of wildlife. A decline in the numbers and health of pollinators over the last several years poses a significant threat to the integrity of biodiversity, to global food webs, and to human health. PollinatorLIVE: A Distance Learning Adventure will provide a series of live interactive Web casts, Web seminars, and satellite field trips about pollinators, gardening, and conservation. All resources are free and geared toward grades 4–8.

Environment Canada - Take Action for the Environment - The BioKits The BioKits Exploring the great outdoors and beyond! To highlight the International Year of Biodiversity in 2010, the Biosphère is producing a series of BioKits aimed at inspiring families to get out and explore the urban spaces and natural areas in their own neighbourhoods and beyond. Through a series of interactive, outdoor activities offered in both the Urban BioKit and theNature BioKit, participants are initiated to biodiversity and are offered ways of taking action to preserve it.It’s four seasons of outdoor fun! Just let your senses be your guide! Click here to learn more about the Urban BioKit!Click here to learn more about the Nature BioKit! The BioKits also include some site-specific versions that allow visitors to explore biodiversity in a specific area such as a park or wildlife area. At each stop, a new activity and a new direction to choose: where will this adventure lead you next? Using a "build your own adventure" approach, participants can rent a GPS unit or follow a map to uncover specific points of interest. The activity takes about an hour and a half (good/ bad weather). Participants must bring their outdoor material. Two of these BioKits will be offered during the summer of 2010. The Biosphère will offer the Île Sainte-Hélène BioKit and the Cap Tourmente National Wildlife Area will be offering the Cap Tourmente BioKit. Stay tuned, there are more BioKits to come!

Hello!

I'm writing to let you know about an exciting program starting this fall. RiverXchange is a FREE year-long cultural exchange project using water as a theme to teach science, social studies, language arts and computer technology.

We are looking for motivated 4th or 5th grade teachers to become high tech pen pals with classes in New Mexico , USA . Each class will follow the RiverXchange curriculum to learn about their local river. Students will share what they are learning via a private wiki website about twice per month throughout the school year. The RiverXchange curriculum covers three units:

Understanding a Watershed
Water in Our Society
River Ecosystem

I am contacting you for two reasons:

1) to request your help getting the word out about this project to teachers who may be interested in participating.

2) to find out if your organization is interested in providing one or more classroom guest speakers (or a field trip) for local teachers who are accepted into this project. Guest speakers in the classroom or on the field trip to the river provide a fresh perspective and help participants learn valuable technical information.

"I have to tell you this has been the most innovative project I've ever been a part of. Though my kids were very reluctant to blog, we read every entry and have learned so much. I am currently working on my curriculum for the coming year and will incorporate RiverXchange into that curriculum. It has enriched our Idaho history beyond belief. Though I've taught Idaho History over many years, for the first time this year the students actually understood the importance of water to Lewis and Clark, the trappers and traders and the folks along the Oregon Trail . As we mapped the trails they were right on top of locating how near they were to water."

"RiverXchange enabled the students to be more involved in learning than other projects I have implemented and seen. Students had to digest what they learned and re-tell that learning to someone else. This forced them to take ownership of the information and experiences. Also, the variety of the activities appealed to different student learning styles. Students had to research, do hands-on activities and learn to communicate. There was some aspect that appealed to every student."

"Students are much more aware of their impact on our limited water resources. They have given a lot more thought to how they use water and how they can conserve it. They are also more in tune with what they need to do to try to protect our watershed starting with their own backyard and the parks around our school."

Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), in collaboration with Metro Vancouver, the Stewardship Centre of BC, BC Hydro and Green Streets (a national educational program funded by the McConnell Foundation) are sponsoring a digital storytelling production workshop in advance of the 2010 Canadian Environmental Education and Communication conference at Simon Fraser University May 20-22, 2010.

DFO is sponsoring (travel expenses) one team led by Bren McKenzie a youth who participated in SEP’s Community Involvement Program at the Kingfisher Interpretive Centre as a child and went on to become a professional river guide. His brothers, equally affected by SEP-Community Involvement Program, are working in the sports fishing industry on the coast and endeavour to incorporate catch and release as well as other conservation methods in their daily work practices.

The film produced by Pacific Cinematheque is meant to encourage youth (ages 15-29 approximately) to participate in salmon conservation. This age group is identified as a "gap" in the DFO Stream to Sea program. The five other participating teams from the other partners all have a stewardship ethic as their theme and will support each other through this intense volunteer commitment. The service provider, Pacific Cinematheque, is a national organization that has decades of experience in working with grassroots film production. The finished products could be linked to a Facebook page or put on YouTube to share. http://www.cinematheque.bc.ca/

This exercise will also serve as an innovative means of capturing a case study, complementing the other survey work being done to support the SEP Performance Measurement Framework.

Participation is limited to the first 50 registrants, and teachers or
other education and outreach professionals will be given priority. The
webinar will be conducted using the Wimba interface, so high speed
internet connection and the ability to talk through the computer or a
telephone will be necessary to participate. Detailed instructions for
joining will be sent to all registered participants.

The HINTS lab (www.hintslab.org ) at the university of Washington is
working on a research project called a Nature Language.

The purpose of the project is to collect personal nature stories that
help us better understand the many ways people relate to and interact
with the natural world.

We have developed a website (www.naturelanguage.com ) where people can
visit and share a story about their interaction(s) with nature. These
stories will be analyzed as qualitative data if the user agrees to it.

There is also a community area where people can read and comment on
other people's posted nature stories.

We would like to invite people to visit the website, read about people's

nature interactions, and share a story if inclined to do so.

Until March 28, Environment Canada is inviting Canadians between the ages of 9 and 35 to submit short written or video essays that answer the following question: "Why is nature important to you?"

The United Nations declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity and as part of Environment Canada's celebration of this event, they have launched a national contest called: Nature Matters!

Winners of the contest will be flown to Ottawa as guests of honour for the Grand Reopening event of the Canadian Museum of Nature, on International Biodiversity Day on May 22, 2010, where their achievement will be announced. Additionally, all grand-prize winning written and video essays will be displayed at the Biosphère in Montreal during 2010.

The stories, which will be featured during APTN National News March 8 to March 11 at 6:00 pm ET on APTN East/MT on APTN West/CT on APTN North/ET on APTN HD, and will culminate in an hour-long special season finale edition of APTN InFocus March 12, will focus on the major issues in every region of Canada: North, South/Central, East and West.

APTN Environmental Week Outline:

North – Peel Watershed – airdate Monday March 8th:

Yukon’s Peel Watershed is rich in minerals and other resources, but many of the people who use the Peel Watershed say it’s worth protecting from development. APTN’s Dez Loreen will look at the resources that make the land so valuable, the traditions that make the region so rich, and the debate over how best to deal with it all.

East – Boat Harbour, Nova Scotia – airdate March 9th:

The Pictou Landing First Nation has been fighting for more than 40 years to get the Nova Scotia government and industry to clean up the harbour. The waters, which at one time featured pristine beaches, are now making people sick. Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter’s new NDP government says it’s committed to solving the Boat Harbour problem. APTN’s James Hopkin talks to the people in the Mi’kmaq community and to the 10th provincial minister to deal with the file.

South/Central – Mercury Pollution airdate March 10th:

The people of the Grassy Narrows First Nation in Ontario are battling the severe health effects of mercury exposure. The emissions that polluted the watershed where they live began decades ago and the federal government says the problem has been fixed, but young people in the community are still showing the horrific symptoms of mercury poisoning. APTN's Melissa Ridgen visited the community to find answers.

West – Deep Water Port for Super Tankers airdate March 11th:

Plans are in development for a pipeline to carry oil from the Alberta tar sands to Kitimat, British Columbia, where a deep water port will provide transport to supertankers which will carry oil to US and Pacific Rim markets. The ships will navigate near Hartley Bay First Nation, one of the country’s most environmentally conscious communities. With the nearby waters being well-known for their danger, the people of Hartley Bay fear a massively destructive oil spill. APTN's Noemi LoPinto travels to the community to find out what happens next.

APTN InFocus One-Hour Season Finale airdate March 12th:

On Friday, March 12th APTN National News will be pre-empted for a special one-hour edition (and season finale) of APTN InFocus. This special edition will feature a panel of experts who will discuss the four Perspectives on the Environment stories that aired during the week on APTN National News.

They will also examine the poor water quality in many Indigenous communities, 119 of which are under a Drinking Water Advisory.

The panel of experts will include:

Dr. John O’Connor, the physician who blew the whistle on unusually high incidence of cancer clusters near the Alberta oil patch (Fort McMurray).

Merrell-Ann S. Phare, Executive Director and Legal Counsel, Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources.

Ramsay Hart, Canada Program Coordinator, Mining Watch Canada, to deal with environmental aspects of mining

Dr. Shirley Thompson, University of Manitoba, Assistant Professor, Natural Resources Institute, will talk about the actual biological effects of industrial pollution on the human body.
